After the Fleet Review....
So, were you there? Those of us that were at the Review will have many
vivid memories of the day. Sadly they will blur and slowly fade but to
remind you of what it was really like here's a panoramic photo of the
whole scene as viewed from the top of St Martin's House on Western
Parade at about 4.00pm on 28th June 2005. Shame it was rather dull at
the time. [The photo file size is 269Kb so if you're on a slow
connection please give it time to load. Scan across the image using the

...and the people who were there....
If you were there you may well appear in our new section on the People
of Portsmouth which has been launched with a collection of photographs
of people who were at the Fleet Review. The new section at www.people.inportsmouth.co.uk
is the brainchild of Jo Grant who has been snapping images of
residents, holidaymakers and other visitors as part of a larger project
to promote her services as a photographer. We are pleased to let her
have the space to show off her talents. Welcome Jo!
...and the photographers' tower
Whatever you may think about the origins of the Spinnaker Tower, it does
make for an arresting skyline. It has that solitary splendour implied
in it's name - a single sail on a vast ocean. But what's this?? More
buildings are ascending skywards from the Gunwharf development and they
are going to make a profound difference to the views of the Spinnaker.
InPortsmouth believes that the view must be saved and is frantically
scouring the city for interesting photos of the solo tower before it is
absorbed into the wider complex. We will be displaying the best 99
photos in a permanent exhibition on this site; you can see the photos we
have online by visiting our Spinnaker Gallery.
In taking these photographs we have been astonished at the number of
places from which we can see the tower, and just how the tower has, in a
very short space of time, utterly altered the visual experience of our
community.
Artists Harbour....
A new space for artwork in the dockyard is gradually making a name for
itself. Housed in the Grade 1 listed Storehouse 9 the Artists Harbour
aims to be more than just another gallery, as, in addition to regular
exhibitions of original art, photography and sculpture, there are also a
wide range of services to the art world. The gallery has it's own
resident artists and promises to provide a comprehensive collection of
books and kits for children. A full desciption of the services on offer
is on the Artists Harbour website.
InPortsmouth Today
InPortsmouth is now in it's fifth year of operation and it continues to
welcome some 15,000 unique visitors a month. Whilst this is good news
for us we are not blind to the fact that areas of the site are becoming
rather out of date. Whilst we do our best to counteract this effect we
have very limited resources and so rely largely on our visitors letting
us know when they notice inaccurate information.
Thanks to one eagle eyed visitor who noticed we were still advertising some Post Offices that had closed, we obtained an up to date list of POs still operating after the recent cull and are confident that the Post Offices section is now correct. If you see something that needs amending please help us and our many visitors by sending an e-mail to the webmaster@inportsmouth.co.uk.
